Nearly 200 wildfires are burning across northern Ontario, 57 of them out of control, forcing roughly 1,800 people from their communities as First Nations leaders demand better government coordination.
About 200 active wildfires are burning across northern Ontario, most of them in the Northwest region, with 57 still classified as out of control.
Roughly 1,800 people have been evacuated from their communities, including Armstrong, Collins, Lac La Croix, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs and Whitesand.
Neskantaga First Nation is planning another evacuation flight, while Thunder Bay — already at limited hotel capacity — is redirecting evacuees to Toronto.
Leaders of affected First Nations are calling for stronger coordination from provincial and federal governments on crisis management and long-term housing for evacuees.
Officials expect further evacuations in the coming days as thick smoke continues to blanket large parts of northern Ontario.
