A minor earthquake shook the Cap-Rouge area of Quebec City on Sunday evening, as the region continues to experience a humid heat spell prone to thunderstorms since the start of the month.

A magnitude 2.8 earthquake was recorded just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening about a dozen kilometres southwest of downtown Quebec City, in the Cap-Rouge area, according to available seismological data. No property damage or injuries were reported to local authorities in the hours that followed.

Residents in several North Shore neighbourhoods reported feeling a light tremor, with no significant noise or falling objects reported. Minor earthquakes of this kind remain common in the Charlevoix–Kamouraska seismic zone, which extends into the greater Quebec City region, and typically do not require emergency response.

The event comes as Environment Canada maintains a heat and thunderstorm watch for much of central Quebec since early August, with warm, humid air fueling storms that can turn severe later in the day. Municipal authorities are reminding residents of standard storm precautions: avoid flood-prone areas, unplug sensitive electronics, and monitor municipal alerts.

No link has been established between the minor seismic activity and the weather conditions, as the two phenomena are entirely unrelated.

What to watch: Environment Canada’s forecast for the rest of the week, which points to possible additional late-day thunderstorms across the greater Quebec City region and the Mauricie.
