Military escalation continued in the Middle East Thursday: U.S. Central Command announced new strikes on Iran, an Iranian strike killed one person in Kuwait, and Jordan says it intercepted five missiles.
CENTCOM said early Thursday it had completed a “heavy wave” of overnight strikes on Iran, targeting military command centres, missile and drone production sites, and a coastal surveillance post. Washington said the strikes followed attacks by Iranian forces on U.S. military assets in the region. CENTCOM reported one U.S. service member killed and another wounded.
Kuwait’s military said an Iranian strike hit a Chinese firm’s building in the north of the country Thursday morning, causing severe damage and killing one worker.
Hours earlier, Jordan said its air defenses intercepted five missiles launched from Iranian territory, with no casualties reported on the Jordanian side.
The developments come as other global flashpoints draw international attention, including continued Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities and rescue operations in Japan, where a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Kumamoto region on Tuesday.
What to watch
The risk of further escalation or retaliation; possible civil aviation and shipping advisories for the region; diplomatic reaction from allies and the UN.
