A severe thunderstorm watch, in effect Tuesday across roughly fifty sectors of southern Quebec, brought strong winds, hail and heavy rain to several regions, prompting municipal crews and Hydro-Québec to assess the extent of the damage.

Environment Canada had issued a yellow watch covering Outaouais, the Laurentians, Mauricie, Capitale-Nationale, Chaudière-Appalaches, greater Montreal, Lanaudière, Montérégie and Centre-du-Québec, citing conditions favourable to strong gusts, hail and heavy rainfall.

In Outaouais, a special weather statement warned of 50 to 100 millimetres of rain between Tuesday and Wednesday morning as a low-pressure system was expected to stall over the region.

In Lanaudière, conditions were favourable for gusts, hail and heavy rain Tuesday afternoon and evening, with risk of damage to roofs, fences, tree branches and temporary shelters.

This latest episode comes weeks after early-July storms knocked out power to more than 137,000 Quebec households, with gusts reaching 119 km/h and uprooted trees, notably in L’Assomption in Lanaudière.
