A House of Commons committee is holding a special meeting today on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, as the Liberal government continues to face questions over its revenue-sharing agreement with the United States.

Wednesday’s meeting is expected to be largely administrative, with MPs set to agree on the scope of the committee’s study and draw up a list of witnesses to call, according to multiple Canadian news outlets.

The bridge, connecting Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, Michigan, opened to motorists on Monday. The agreement in principle governing its operation calls for Canada to share half of net toll revenues with the United States over the next 15 years.

That provision has proven controversial: Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously said tolls would not be shared with Washington until Canada’s debt for building the bridge was paid off. The gap between those earlier statements and the actual terms of the deal has fuelled questions from the opposition, prompting the committee’s examination.

The list of witnesses the committee decides to call, the timeline for its study, and any clarification Ottawa provides on the exact terms for repaying the construction debt before revenue-sharing begins.
