U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday imposing 50 percent tariffs on a list of Canadian goods, including wine, hockey sticks and cement. The new duties, framed by Washington as a response to “discriminatory” trade practices, are set to take effect in roughly 30 days.

According to a White House fact sheet, the order targets sectors the Trump administration says have benefited from unfair treatment of American autos, alcohol and dairy products. The 50 percent tariffs would apply to a specific list of Canadian goods and take effect roughly a month after signing — around mid-August.

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded in an official statement, saying Canada “stands ready to engage intensively” with the United States to resolve outstanding trade issues “to the mutual benefit” of both countries’ citizens. The statement did not specify whether Ottawa plans new retaliatory tariffs, as it has done at several points since the trade dispute began in February 2025.

The move adds to a string of unilateral U.S. actions that Ottawa considers inconsistent with the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Canada has previously responded with retaliatory tariffs covering tens of billions of dollars in American goods over the course of the more than year-long trade war.

Industry representatives in the affected sectors — wine, cement and sporting goods — warn the cost of the new tariffs could be passed on to consumers on both sides of the border. Canadian industry associations are calling on the federal government for targeted financial support while a diplomatic resolution is pursued.

Ottawa’s official response in the coming days, a possible Canadian retaliatory measure, and the state of talks between the two governments before the mid-August effective date.
