U.S. President Donald Trump signed three proclamations imposing 50% tariffs on several categories of Canadian products, including wine, hockey sticks and cement, citing what the administration calls discriminatory treatment of American exports.

President Trump signed the proclamations on July 20 under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, imposing additional 50% duties on a range of Canadian goods. The White House says the move responds to what it calls discriminatory Canadian treatment of key American exports, including automobiles, dairy products and alcoholic beverages.

The new tariffs take effect in 30 days, on August 19, and cover products including wine, hockey sticks and cement. The measure excludes energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals. Some of the targeted goods had previously been shielded from duties under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by calling the move “the latest in a series of unilateral U.S. trade actions,” saying it directly violates the trilateral free trade agreement. Ottawa has not yet announced specific retaliatory measures, though consultations with affected industries are reportedly underway.

The announcement comes amid sustained trade tension between the two countries. Canada’s wine and manufacturing sectors, concentrated particularly in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, could be hit hard if higher export costs persist.
