Forestry giant Canfor has confirmed the permanent closure of its Northwood pulp mill in Prince George, cutting roughly 300 jobs in a sector already strained by a global supply glut and new U.S. tariffs.
Canfor announced July 14 it will close its Northwood pulp mill in Prince George, B.C., a decision affecting about 300 employees.
The company cited “significant challenges” in the pulp and paper sector: a global oversupply that has pushed down prices, along with fibre-supply difficulties that led to unsustainable financial losses.
Production is expected to wind down through the end of 2026 ahead of permanent closure. Canfor says it will support affected employees with severance and redeployment opportunities at other company operations.
The closure lands as Canada’s forestry sector absorbs another blow from new U.S. tariffs — a 50% duty on a range of Canadian goods set to take effect Aug. 19.
