Canada’s provincial and territorial premiers gathered Tuesday in Prince Edward Island for their annual three-day summer meeting, held in the shadow of a renewed US tariff threat.

According to reporting from The Canadian Press, carried by paNOW and Canada’s National Observer, internal trade and major infrastructure projects are expected to dominate the agenda at this year’s summer gathering. Provincial and territorial leaders are looking to cut remaining barriers to trade between provinces and to advocate for major projects that could bring investment and jobs to their regions.

The premiers are also scheduled to meet with Indigenous leaders later Tuesday. Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to join the discussions Thursday, the meeting’s final day, for a session with all provincial and territorial leaders.

The meeting comes a day after US President Donald Trump signed an order imposing new 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods. While Ottawa has already responded with reciprocal tariffs, emergency funds and buy-Canadian policies, several premiers are calling on Carney to prioritize a strong outcome on the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

What to watch

  • Tuesday’s meeting between premiers and Indigenous leaders.
  • Carney’s arrival Thursday and his response to provincial demands on CUSMA.
  • Any announcements on removing interprovincial trade barriers.
