The United States carried out an eighth consecutive night of strikes on Iranian military targets after a missile and drone attack killed two U.S. service members and left a third missing in Jordan.

On July 17, two U.S. service members were killed and another went missing as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on a base used by U.S. forces at Al-Azraq, Jordan. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it destroyed several aircraft.

In response, CENTCOM says it struck Iranian coastal surveillance installations, air defence sites, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage facilities linked to the IRGC. Saturday marked the eighth consecutive night of U.S. strikes on Iran since the conflict between the two countries resumed this month.

Iran also targeted U.S. regional allies. The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said one of its vital oil-sector sites was hit Friday morning by “repeated, brutal” Iranian attacks, causing severe material losses and some injuries. Bahrain was also struck by Iranian attacks.

The conflict, which resumed nearly five months ago, has now killed 16 U.S. service members in total.

On another front, more than a hundred pro-settlement Israelis, accompanied by several government ministers including Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, breached military checkpoints near Gaza on Sunday as part of a “March of Thousands” demanding the re-establishment of Israeli settlements in the enclave, despite the area having been declared a closed military zone by the IDF.

What to watch

  • Whether U.S.-Iran strikes continue or ease in the coming days.
  • Kuwait and Bahrain’s response after attacks on their territory.
  • The outcome of the “March of Thousands” near Gaza and the Israeli government’s response.
