A Ferran Torres goal in extra time lifted Spain to a 1-0 win over Argentina in front of more than 80,000 fans at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, closing out the first World Cup co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Spain was crowned world champion on Sunday, July 19, defeating three-time champion Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in front of a crowd of more than 80,000, capping a tournament co-hosted for the first time in World Cup history by three countries — Canada, Mexico and the United States. Kickoff was at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
For Canada, a co-host and participant in the tournament, the run ended in the round of 16, where the Canadian team was eliminated by Morocco. Toronto and Vancouver were among Canada’s host cities for the tournament.
Canada’s prime minister attended the final, according to the Prime Minister’s Office’s official weekend schedule.
