Just arrived in Quebec? Here are the essential steps to take in your first days to settle in smoothly. This practical guide is for newcomers and will be updated regularly.
1. Get your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
The SIN is a nine-digit number required to work and access government services. Visit a Service Canada office in the first few days after your arrival, with your identity documents.
2. Register for health insurance (RAMQ)
Register with the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) as soon as you arrive — registration is often available online. Note: as a general rule, coverage only begins after a waiting period of about three months. It is strongly recommended to take out private insurance for that period.
3. Open a bank account
A bank account is needed for everyday spending and to receive your salary. Go in person to a financial institution with the required identification. Many banks offer no-fee packages for newcomers.
4. Find housing
Whether temporary housing on arrival or a longer-term lease, learn about your rights as a tenant in Quebec and the cost of living by region.
5. Receive your Permanent Resident card
If you are a permanent resident, your card is an important proof of identity and status. Make sure your address is up to date with IRCC so you receive it.
6. Enrol your children in school
School is a right for all children. Contact your local school service centre for enrolment and assessment of prior learning.
7. Connect with settlement services
Settlement organizations offer free support (French-language classes, job search, administrative steps). The Québec.ca — Settle and integrate portal lists many official resources.
