Nearly 200 wildfires are burning across northwestern Ontario, forcing evacuations and highway closures, as the province asks Ottawa to prepare federal support, including a possible military deployment.
About 129 active fires were reported in Ontario’s Northwest region as of late last week, pushing the provincial total toward 200 blazes, according to local fire officials.
Roughly 15 communities, including several First Nations, are evacuating or weighing evacuation due to proximity to the flames or heavy smoke. Indigenous Services Canada says 1,600 people have been evacuated from First Nations communities so far this season.
Ontario has asked the federal government to prepare resources, including a possible Canadian Armed Forces deployment, to support evacuation efforts.
Smoke from the fires has drifted as far as Toronto and the northeastern United States, where Environment Canada is maintaining poor air-quality warnings.
