Toronto was blanketed in an orange haze on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, as wildfire smoke from northwestern Ontario drifted across the southern part of the province. The city’s air quality ranked among the worst of any major city in the world during the day.

More than 830 wildfires were burning across Canada on Wednesday, with over 100 classified as out of control, authorities said. Most of the fires are concentrated in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. Roughly 1.9 million hectares have burned so far this season.

The City of Toronto confirmed that CampTO field trips and registered outdoor programs were cancelled, postponed or moved indoors where possible. Some FIFA World Cup events were also affected. The smoke is spreading into the northeastern United States, degrading air quality for millions of people.

What to watch

Air quality warnings remain in effect. Vulnerable groups — seniors, children, and people with heart or respiratory conditions — are advised to limit outdoor activity. Conditions will shift with wind patterns and the progression of the fires.
