WestJet flight attendants voted 99.4% in favour of a strike mandate, according to results released on July 15, 2026. A representative of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) said 97.3% of members took part in the vote.

About 4,400 members represented by CUPE Local 8125 could legally walk off the job as early as Aug. 2, following a mandatory 21-day cooling-off period.

CUPE Local 8125 president Alia Hussain said: “We are the second-largest carrier in Canada, and we are among some of the lowest paid, and that has to change.” The union is pressing for pay covering all hours worked, including time on the ground.

What to watch

A strike mandate does not automatically trigger a walkout. Bargaining can continue during the cooling-off period. Travellers with early-August flights are advised to monitor the airline’s notices.
